World Day for
Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. This is a United Nations-sanctioned
international holiday for the promotion of diversity issues. It is an
opportunity to help communities understand the value of cultural diversity and
learning how to live together in harmony. The day was created as a result of
the destruction of Buddha statues of Bamiyan in 2001.
Afro-Colombian
Day (Colombia). It is an annual commemoration of the abolition of slavery in
Colombia on May 21, 1851. It helps to show the natives the importance of the
Afro population and the effect it has on the history of Colombia.
Afro-Colombian
Day celebrates the artistic, intellectual and social contributions of Afro-Colombians
in Colombia and on this day, people celebrate through food, music, art and
local folklore.
What Happened

In 1904,
the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) was founded in
Paris. FIFA is the international governing body of association football,
futsal, beach soccer and efootball. It is the highest governing body in
football and is currently headed by Italian Gianni Infantino.

In 1991,
Mengistu Haile Mariam, the President of Ethiopia fled the country, effectively
bringing the Ethiopian Civil War to an end. The war was fought between the
Ethiopian military junta government and Ethio-Eritrean anti-government rebels
from 1974 to 1991 and it led to the death of 1.4 million people, a million of
these from hunger and the rest from combat.

In 1996,
the ferry, MV Bukoba, sank in Tanzanian waters in Lake Victoria, killing over
1,000 people. The ferry carried passengers and cargo between Mwanza and Bukoba
with overcrowding believed to be the main reason for its sinking, which
happened 56 kilometres off Mwanza in 25 meters of water.
