What’s Happening Today?

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. In 1994, the UN General Assembly proclaimed September 16 the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing, in 1987, of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the Ozone Layer. 
The closure of the hole in the ozone layer was observed 30 years after the protocol was signed. Due to the nature of the gases responsible for ozone depletion, their chemical effects are expected to continue for between 50 and 100 years. 

Martyrs Day (Libya). It commemorates those who have given their lives for the independence of Libya on the anniversary of the execution of the notable resistance leader, Omar al-Mukhtar on this day in 1931.

What Happened Today?

1. In 1908, General Motors Corporation was founded in Flint, Michigan by William C. Durant and Charles Stewart Mott. The company, also known as GM, was one of the world's largest manufacturers of cars and trucks. Most notably, the company manufactured Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Hummer brand cars.

2. In 1963, Malaysia was created. The Federation of Malaya united with Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore to create Malaysia. Singapore left the arrangement two years later.

3. In 1978, an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter Scale rocked the city of Tabas in Iran, killing more than 11,000 people. Eighty percent of the loss of life occurred in Tabas, but a total of 85 villages were affected. This shock was felt in Tehran, about 610 kilometres (380 mi) away.
