What’s Happening Today?

Victory Day (Mozambique). Victory Day (Dia da Vitória, in Portuguese) also known as Lusaka Peace Agreement Day is a public holiday in Mozambique observed on September 7. The day commemorates the end of the Mozambican War of Independence on this day in 1974, with the signing of the Lusaka Peace Agreement.

Independence Day (Brazil). This is Brazil's National Day. In Portuguese, it is called 'Dia da Independência' and may also be known as 'Sete de Setembro' (September 7) or 'Dia da Pátria' (Nation Day). On September 7 1822, a declaration of independence from Portugal was made by Pedro di Alcântara, the 23-year-old son of the Portuguese King.

What Happened Today?

1. In 1996,  Rapper and hip hop artist Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada. He succumbed to his injuries six days later. The shooting was suspected to have been as a result of a feud between the East and West Coast rapping entities headed by Notorious BIG and Tupac respectively.

2. In 2005, South Sudan's then first vice-president Salva Kiir made a one-day visit to Uganda at the invitation of President Yoweri Museveni. Kiir's 13-man team discussed ex-president John Garang's death probe over his death in a helicopter crash, the LRA rebellion and transport links between Uganda and South Sudan.

3. In 2005, Egypt held its first-ever multi-party election. Hosni Mubarak, the former President of Egypt, won a fifth consecutive six-year term in office, with official results showing he won 88.6% of the vote. Mubarak's opponent, Ayman Nour, of the Tomorrow Party, is estimated to have received 7.3% of the vote and Numan Gumaa received 2.8%,
