KIU Main Campus – Geofry Akabwai (middle), KIU’s soccer coach, has recently been named one of the new regional Chief Instructors by the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA). The announcement was made following a graduation ceremony on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

This graduation marked the conclusion of a three-day training camp held in Kisaasi, where the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) and FUFA instructors led a series of sessions covering football administration, coaching, refereeing, and goalkeeping.

According to FUFA, the training was part of the Federation’s Technical Masterplan, aimed at enhancing human resources within Ugandan football. The goal is to train 2,240 individuals in each category of football administration, coaching, refereeing, and goalkeeping by 2030.

“The final products of the course will become Regional Chief Instructors in each of the four areas- administration, coaching, refereeing, and goalkeeping,” a statement on the FUFA website stated.

The program also took into account specialized areas such as 5-a-side games, as well as contributions from the Uganda Beach Soccer Association and the Futsal Association of Uganda, which each submitted one candidate for the coaching instructors' course.

Akabwai, nominated for his expertise in beach soccer, expressed his excitement about the achievement. “I’m extremely happy to have advanced my football administration knowledge and responsibility,” he said.

“It’s a great achievement for me because I was the only one to pass the course among many, becoming a Beach Soccer Coach Instructor in the country. I’m confident I will contribute significantly to the development of the game in Uganda. I will also support FUFA in achieving the objectives outlined in the Technical Masterplan, which was launched in 2023,” he added.

Akabwai’s new role is a major milestone for both him and KIU. His expanded expertise in both beach soccer and football will surely benefit the university’s young athletes, contributing to the growth of the sport in Uganda.
