In the recent years, Kampala International University (KIU) has been able to ease the tension that comes with starting off the semester for both the students and lecturers. This has been achieved through the introduction of a one-month modular session.
A modular is a course that is shorter than a full semester and can start and end on any week during the semester. Students are encouraged to enroll for modular courses when they enroll for other courses at the beginning of a semester.
Part of the benefits of modular include consistency of content delivery and advice, familiarity with the lecturercâ¬â?cs teaching style and better continuity of the subject content. In addition, the session, which mainly involves a student-centered approach, gives students enough time to revise since they break off for holidays with the module.
According to Head of Department Political and Administrative Studies, Muzaare Gerald, modular sessions work perfectly at KIU since both the students and lecturers are set in gear for the coming semesters by handling assignments due at the beginning of each semester.
This program also helps students to focus better since they are introduced to two course units at the beginning of the semester which eases the workload as opposed to studying all the six to seven course units at a go.
Bruno Nagaluma, a student in his final year pursuing a course in Public Administration, says that the modular sessions have reduced his burden and given him room to concentrate on the remaining three-course units.
"I will definitely qualify in this my final semester. My course units have been cut down to three since I did the other two during the modular session. I am therefore committed to seeing that I perform to the best of my expectations this being my last year," he said excitedly.
