Prof. Dr. Andrew Kitua is a Medical Doctor, Epidemiologist, and medical researcher with vast experience in public health, clinical trials, and health systems research. He has been working as a consultant and in leadership positions in health research and development.
He has a Doctorate Degree from Basel University, Switzerland, and a Doctor of Medicine from Medicine and Surgery (MD), Universita Degli Studi di Milano (La Statale), Italy. He also holds a Master of Science in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), United Kingdom.
From January 2022, he has been serving as the Chair of the Governing Council of the National Institute for Medical Research, Tanzania, and currently the Director of NGALAKERI Public Health and Environment Advancement Interventions NGO registered in Tanzania. From April 2020 to May 2022, he served as the African Regional Director of the USAID financed Regional Action Through Data (RAD) Project of BroadReach Group.
With over 43 years in strengthening health systems and implementing health interventions, Prof. Kitua has been promoting networking in health research and multisectoral collaboration in health. He has conducted and participated in capacity building and training in health research including research methodology ethics in health research, epidemiology, clinical research, and operational research.
He initiated the East African Integrated Disease Surveillance Network which was later handed over to the East African Community (EAC). He co-participated in initiating the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) and later the EDCTP Networks of Excellence.
From 2008-2010, he was a member of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) Special Programme for Research and Training (STAC). In 2001, he initiated the Tanzanian National Health Research Forum (TANHER-Forum), which linked research to inform policy, and established and funded the Tanzanian Health Research Journal.
Prof. Dr. Kitua has vast experience in working with national and international organizations, as well as engaging national and regional governments and African economic communities.
