KIU, Western Campus – As per the directives of the Ministry of Health, hospital's around the country, including the KIU Teaching Hospital have prepared themselves for COVID-19.

To learn more about KIUTH's preparedness, we caught up with Muhammad Musa, the Deputy Principal Nursing Officer and member of the COVID-19 taskforce for a quick chat.

According to him, never in his career has he experienced anything as menacing as COVID-19.

“It is a totally new phenomenon of course, but the death rates arising from its spread is alarming. I had never imagined anything like this,” Musa says.

So, when the tall, lean and light-skinned Nurse was called into action after the revival of the hospital’s Ebola emergency unit, he swore to himself that he would do his utmost best to combat the disease.

Musa makes it a point to come in to the hospital early everyday to make sure that that the safety equipment like the temperature gun is working well and the triage nurses are on ground.

Next, he coordinates the supply of equipment to the checkpoint and briefs the personnel on duty, before moving on to his other duties. Still, even when he has started his office work, he keeps on making routine checks on the triage centre to make sure everything is moving smoothly.

“I have to make sure everything is going on well. Otherwise, any slip up may be costly,” Musa says.

Some of his roles as a member of the taskforce include coordinating information flow within the hospital staff, especially the nurses at the triage centre and aiding the PNO in picking supplies from the district and accompanying her for meetings with the District Health Officer, when necessary.

Furthermore, the Deputy Principal Nursing Officer shared on the challenge that comes with his role citing the, "risk of infection."

However, he acknowledged that his motivation to move forward comes from wanting to see a world free of the Coronavirus so that the everything can return to normal.
